Let us use a inline 4 cylinder for an example.
Header shown below this is one piece and is a header (yes it comes apart near the y merges but that is not the point). people need to stop calling it headers!
now here is a set of headers for a V8 notice there are two.
Headers are two header is one. Thanks.

Not gonna happen. Now get a new pair of pants.

But since there's only one piece of clothing, wouldn't you mean a new pant?

It is just a thing people say, I think they know that they only have one, but it sounds much less awkward. Either way, it doesn't really matter that much.

Same goes for bicycle and motorcycle forks. Bikes have one fork:

"I'm gonna get some headers for my miata cuz I need 5 more hp."
It sounds incredibly dumb there is only one header on a miata.
"I'm gonna get a header for my miata cuz I need 5 more hp."
this just sounds better to me.

Totally agree. I guess because they see multiple primaries, they assume its pural. Header, by itself, does sound kinda funny.

I don't know, they both sound pretty much the same. It is like saying that you should call pants "pant" instead because there is only one.
Also, is this a header or headers? It comes off of two seperate heads. . .

Go on! If you get two headers for your Miata obviously there's going to be twice as much exhaust flow. Tell me that won't improve performance. And why stop there? Three, four, five, as many as you can cram under the hood, until the car catches on fire.

Also getting a header as your first mod is kind of a waste of time. They don't really help until you've done other stuff that requires the extra flow.

For a long time we called them extractors anyway.

Or you can crawl out of the Alabama back woods and stop saying "header" all together. Call it what it is: exhaust manifold

Manifold header.
A manifold collects the exhaust in a chamber of sorts before it exists through a single pipe. Mostly OE due to lower development costs.
A header pipes it all back through a series of Y's until it's all in one pipe.
